According to top federal health officials, the information on increasing COVID-19 cases in the US and other countries suggests that the Omicron wave may be milder. However, the variant threatens to overwhelm health systems already burdened from earlier surges. Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease and Prevention, stated that cases have surged by 60 percent. However, death and hospitalization figures stayed “comparatively low.”
